Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a powerful message on Sunday, condemning crimes against women as "unforgivable sins" and assuring that offenders will face the full force of the law. Speaking at the Lakhpati Didi event in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon, PM Modi addressed the growing national outrage over recent incidents such as the Kolkata doctor's rape and murder, the Badlapur school sex abuse case, and the Assam gang rape.
Emphasizing the government's commitment to safeguarding women’s safety and dignity, PM Modi highlighted several steps his administration has taken to strengthen the legal framework against such crimes. He underscored the introduction of amendments to existing laws and the creation of new mechanisms designed to ensure that justice is more accessible to victims.
PM Modi noted, “Earlier, there were complaints that FIRs were not filed. We brought the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita [BNS] and made a lot of amendments. If a woman does not want to go to the police station, she can file an e-FIR. Nobody can change or tamper with an e-FIR.”
The Prime Minister also addressed crimes against women within marriage, mentioning specific amendments to the BNS aimed at tackling these issues. He reiterated that the central government would continue to support state governments in their efforts to combat crimes against women.
PM Modi concluded his speech by contrasting the work done by his government over the past decade with that of previous administrations, asserting that no other government has done as much for the women of the country since Independence.
