New orders for illegal construction on Government land in Bengal
In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court has ordered that the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged irregularities by former RG Kar Medical College Principal Sandip Ghosh be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This decision comes amidst growing concerns over the efficiency and effectiveness of multiple agencies handling similar cases.
The CBI is already investigating Ghosh in connection with the tragic rape and murder of a resident doctor at the hospital on August 9th. Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, who presided over the case, noted that the involvement of multiple agencies could lead to delays and inefficiencies.
The directive came in response to a plea by Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent at RG Kar, who claimed that despite filing numerous complaints against Ghosh, no action was taken until the doctor’s death.
In a prior hearing, the court had questioned the timing of the state’s decision to initiate the SIT probe, wondering why it took such a tragic event for the state to act on the complaints. By consolidating the investigation under the CBI, the court aims to streamline the process and ensure a more thorough and timely inquiry into Ghosh's alleged misconduct.
The court has also directed the CBI to submit a status report on the investigation by the next hearing date.
