The tragic death of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College has sparked a wave of protests across West Bengal, with growing concerns about women's safety and the efficacy of law enforcement. The issue has resonated deeply, even drawing prominent figures into the fray.
On Monday, Pramiti Banerjee, daughter of Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee and a practicing lawyer at the Calcutta High Court, joined a protest march organized by lawyers. The demonstration, aimed at demanding justice for the victim, was notable for its solemn tone, with participants carrying banners but refraining from shouting slogans.
Pramiti Banerjee expressed her dismay at the handling of the situation, stating, “I cannot comment on the specifics of the investigation, but what happened was unacceptable. People have taken to the streets for justice, and we lawyers are also joining them. Recent events have raised serious questions about police conduct, including their response to the RG hospital attack and the lathi-charge on the football club procession.”
Banerjee was critical of the police’s performance, accusing them of being active on social media while failing to address real issues. She said, “The police seem very active in spreading news online, but where is their activism in addressing these critical issues?”
Despite her father’s influential position within the ruling Trinamool Congress, Pramiti Banerjee insists that her participation in the protests is driven by her personal beliefs and concerns about safety. She also voiced her fears, stating, “As a woman who often works late, I feel unsafe. It’s distressing to think that such incidents are happening in my city.”
