Tensions escalated at the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata as family members of a deceased patient launched an attack on the trauma care unit, accusing the doctors of medical negligence. The incident resulted in the vandalism of hospital property and the physical assault of an on-duty doctor, Subrata Shur, who sustained injuries during the altercation.
The attack occurred amidst the ongoing protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident has further heightened the already charged atmosphere in the city, with medical professionals under increasing pressure and facing threats to their safety.
Visuals shared on social media show Dr. Subrata Shur in a wounded state, with visible bruises on his face, highlighting the severity of the assault. The family members of the deceased patient, who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, allegedly ambushed the trauma care unit, accusing the medical staff of negligence that they claim led to the patient's death.
A police official confirmed the incident, stating, “His family members came to the hospital and started vandalizing the area, alleging that negligence by doctors had led to the youth’s death.” The situation was brought under control by the hospital's security and law enforcement, but not before significant damage was done to the facility.
In response to the attack, BJP leader Locket Chatterjee took to social media, alleging that the accused had connections to a powerful Minister of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). "This isn’t just an attack on an individual—it’s a direct assault on the very fabric of our society," Chatterjee stated in a tweet, calling for immediate action against those responsible.
