Kolkata police summons Sukhendu Sekhar Roy over 'wrong information' aboud sniffer dogs

Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy has been issued a notice by the Kolkata Police for allegedly spreading "wrong information" regarding the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy has been summoned to appear at the police headquarters at 4 pm on Sunday.

The notice comes after Roy tweeted, demanding a thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which recently took over the probe from the Kolkata Police. In his tweet, Roy called for the custodial interrogation of the ex-Principal of RG Kar Medical College and the Police Commissioner, questioning the integrity of the initial investigation.

"CBI must act fairly. Custodial interrogation of ex-Principal and Police Commissioner is a must to know who and why floated suicide story. Why wall of hall demolished, who patronised Roy to be so powerful. Why sniffer dog used after 3 days. Hundreds of such questions. Make them speak," Roy tweeted.

The Kolkata Police responded by accusing Roy of tweeting incorrect information, particularly regarding the deployment of sniffer dogs at the crime scene. According to the police, sniffer dogs were sent twice—on August 9 and August 12—and not after three days as claimed by Roy.

"The information that sniffer dog was sent after three days is completely wrong. Sniffer dog was sent twice, on 9th and then on 12th (August). A notice under Section 35(1) of BNS has been sent to Sukhendu Sekhar Roy," the Kolkata Police clarified in a statement.

Roy's remarks have also sparked internal controversy within the Trinamool Congress. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh criticized Roy’s statement, particularly his comments regarding the Police Commissioner. Ghosh emphasized that the Police Commissioner had been doing his job diligently and that the investigation was proceeding in the right direction.

"I also demand justice in the RG Kar case. But I strongly oppose this demand regarding the CP. After getting information, he has tried his best. Personally, the CP was doing his job and the investigation was in a positive focus. This kind of post is unfortunate, that too from my senior leader," Ghosh said.
