Many locals cancelled in Howrah division till Monday; Express trains' route altered | See List
Chaos erupted on the Sealdah-Baruipur branch of the railway early Saturday morning when the 6:58 AM Baruipur local was suddenly canceled due to mechanical issues. The unexpected cancellation triggered a wave of anger among passengers, many of whom rely on the train for their daily commute to Kolkata.
The situation escalated quickly at Subhashgram station, where women passengers initiated a blockade in protest. The cancellation left other trains on the route overcrowded, leading to reports that a woman had fallen from one of the packed trains, sustaining injuries. This incident further fueled the passengers' anger.
As the protest gained momentum, the train movement on the Baruipur, Lakshmikantpur, Diamond Harbour, Namkhana, and Kakdwip lines came to a complete halt. Only the Sealdah to Sonarpur and Canning lines remained operational, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and frustrated.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrived at the scene to manage the situation, but their presence only intensified the tension as the protesting passengers demanded a written assurance that train services would resume by noon. Under pressure from the crowd, the police had to retreat and provide the requested assurance.
