Mamata calls urgent meeting at Nabanna tomorrow, key administrative officials to attend
A rabid stray dog attacked and injured 17 people, including children and women, within an hour in Gorakhpur’s Shahpur area on Wednesday night. The terrifying spree began at around 9:45 PM and was captured on CCTV footage.
The CCTV video from outside the home of Ashish Yadav, a 22-year-old BBA student residing in Awas Vikas Colony, shows the dog lunging at him as he talked on his phone outside his house. Despite Ashish's efforts to fend off the dog, it bit him viciously on the leg and then on the face, leaving him bleeding from his mouth, eyes, and lips.
The rabid dog did not stop there. Shortly after attacking Ashish, it targeted a woman returning home. The dog bit her on the knee and leg, causing deep wounds that required several stitches. The attack continued as the dog then turned on two young girls playing outside their home, further heightening the panic in the area.
Ashish's father, Vijay Yadav, expressed frustration and fear as he described the ordeal of taking his son to the district hospital for a rabies vaccine, only to be told that the hospital had run out of the necessary shots. He, along with other victims, reported the incidents to the municipal corporation but claimed that no action had been taken to address the growing stray dog menace in the area.
In response, Durgesh Mishra, Additional Municipal Commissioner of Gorakhpur, stated that he was unaware of the incident and had not received any complaints. "We regularly run a campaign for sterilization of stray dogs, and an Animal Birth Control Center is also being built. Stray dogs are being caught and sterilized, and we run awareness campaigns for vaccination for pet dogs," Mishra said.
