the body of a tribal nursing student was found with her throat slit in Nandur, East Burdwan, during the 'Reclaim The Night' protest led by women. The gruesome discovery has sparked intense outrage within the tribal community, leading to a large-scale protest on Saturday.
From noon, members of the tribal community blocked the Jiagachi area of National Highway No. 81 in Chanchal Samsi, Malda. Using bamboo barricades, the protestors staged a massive demonstration, halting traffic for more than two hours. Several vehicles were stranded as trees were felled across the road to reinforce the blockade.
The protesters voiced their anger and grief, demanding swift justice for the murdered nursing student. "Our tribal sister was brutally murdered not far from East Burdwan. We strongly protest this heinous act. Those involved in this crime must be arrested immediately and face the strictest punishment," said one of the protestors.
They also expressed grave concerns about the safety of women in West Bengal, stating, "No girl in West Bengal is safe at the moment. The protection of our daughters must be ensured. We are protesting today to demand justice and safety for all women."
The blockade was eventually lifted after more than two hours, but the tribal community vowed to continue their protests until their demands are met.
