WB police faces irk on social media after post on injured cop; Netizens slams 'victim card tactics'

The West Bengal Police has come under fire on social media after posting about a woman constable, Shampa Pramanik, who sustained injuries during the midnight march on August 14. The march was part of the 'Reclaim the Night' protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The incident occurred late on Wednesday night when a group of 30-40 unidentified individuals stormed the hospital and vandalized property. The police responded by firing tear gas and resorting to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

In a tweet on Friday, the West Bengal Police highlighted the injuries suffered by Constable Shampa Pramanik, who was on duty in the Baguihati area during the protest. The tweet mentioned that she was hit in the face by a brick thrown from the crowd, leading to her injuries.

However, the tweet did not sit well with social media users, who accused the police of playing the victim card instead of focusing on their primary duty of maintaining law and order.

One user commented, "Hoping for her swift recovery, but why resort to playing the victim? The police were responsible for safeguarding both the protesters and their own officers. It failed at both. Women are demanding safety, and it is your obligation to ensure that. Instead, you play the victim and lay bare your incompetence so poetically."

Another user tweeted, "Your priorities are sorted! Instead of safeguarding citizens and helping the victims, you are crying victim yourself!" "Shameless police force. You guys intimidate common citizens for posts, cannot manage law and order in your state, and want to play victim? Leave your job if you can't do it," another user said.
