SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
The Kolkata Police have arrested 25 individuals in connection with the vandalism that occurred at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14. The arrested individuals have been remanded to police custody until August 22 by a city court. The incident unfolded as a mob forcibly entered the hospital, causing significant damage to various departments, including the emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store, and outpatient department.
The vandalism took place amidst widespread protests across West Bengal over the alleged rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor within the hospital premises. The chaos led to injuries among several individuals, including police officers who were present at the scene.
In response to the incident, junior doctors at government healthcare facilities have continued their strike, demanding strict punishment for those responsible and calling for enhanced security measures at their workplaces. The strike has caused disruptions in medical services across the state.
Opposition parties have criticized the Kolkata Police for their perceived failure to prevent the violence and protect the hospital during the incident. They have called for greater accountability and action against those involved in the attack.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing the media on Thursday evening, revealed that two floors of the hospital's emergency ward were destroyed in the attack. She also reported that medicines were looted, and significant damage was inflicted on the hospital's infrastructure and equipment.
