On the eve of Independence Day, a miscreant identified as Chanchal Sheikh was arrested by police in Maheshpur, located in Birbhum's Nalhati police station area. Sheikh, who resides near Nalhati police station, was spotted roaming the Raniganj-Morgram National Highway No. 14 late at night.
Police, acting on suspicion, apprehended him and discovered a loaded firearm in his possession. Following his arrest, Sheikh was taken to Nalhati police station and subsequently presented at the Rampurhat Sub-Divisional Court. The authorities are investigating the reasons behind his suspicious behavior.
Meanwhile, in Bankura, railway police and local police are on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents on Independence Day. The area is being thoroughly checked with metal detectors and dog squads to ensure security.
