Chandranath Sinha has been appointed as the new Jail Minister of the state, taking over from Akhil Giri who resigned recently. Previously, the jail department was under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister. In his new role, Sinha will manage both the prison department and the small cottage industry sector.
Akhil Giri was made to quit his post by CM Mamata Banerjee earlier this month over a threat made to a woman forest officer. Giri was seen threatening an on-duty woman forest officer heading a team tasked with clearing encroachments in Tajpur, Purba Medinipur.
In 2022, Giri's controversial remarks about President Droupadi Murmu were severely criticized. Mamata Banerjee had to apologize for Giri's "derogatory remark" about Murmu after a massive uproar by the opposition.
