The West Bengal Doctors' Forum has raised serious concerns about potential evidence tampering in the investigation of the brutal rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. In a letter sent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday, the forum alleged that construction work near the crime scene is likely being used to interfere with crucial evidence.
The letter, signed by Dr. Koushik Chaki and Dr. Sanjoy Holme Chowdhury, expressed alarm over the sudden civil reconstruction activities around the seminar hall of the hospital's chest department, where the post-graduate trainee doctor's body was found last Friday with severe injury marks. Preliminary autopsy reports indicated that the victim had been subjected to a violent sexual assault.
"We are extremely apprehensive about the motive behind such an effort and we think that this might hamper the investigation by tampering with important evidence," the doctors wrote. They emphasized the urgency of the situation and urged the CBI to investigate the matter with the seriousness it demands to ensure justice for the deceased.
The doctors' forum also informed the state health secretary about their concerns. Meanwhile, in response to the incident, the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors has called for a cease work at the outpatient departments (OPDs) of all governmental and private hospitals across the state on Wednesday. The strike aims to press for increased security measures in hospitals and demand swift justice for their colleague.
