In a wave of protests following recent violent incidents against medical professionals, the students of Malda Medical College and Hospital have gone on strike demanding enhanced security measures. The strike, which began on Sunday, comes in response to the brutal murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the assault of a doctor at Bulbulchandi Rural Hospital in Malda.
According to the Superintendent of Malda Medical College, the strike has impacted operations, particularly in the emergency and maternity departments. Efforts were to negotiate with the striking students and bring an end to the disruption.
The recent spate of violence against healthcare professionals has caused widespread unrest in West Bengal. On Friday morning, the lifeless body of a woman doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital, sparking outrage across the state. The police have since arrested the accused, who was presented in Sealdah Court on Saturday and remanded to 14 days of police custody.
