7.1 magnitute earthquake hits Japan, Tsunami alert issued after 20 cm high waves recorded

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Japan on Thursday, leading authorities to issue a tsunami advisory for several regions in the southwestern Japanese islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. The Japan Meteorological Agency initially reported the earthquake as a 6.9 magnitude but later upgraded it to 7.1.

The quake centered off the eastern coast of Kyushu at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers, has prompted concerns about potential tsunami waves. Authorities predicted waves of up to 1 meter along the southern coast of Kyushu and the nearby island of Shikoku. In Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu, 20-centimeter high waves have already been observed.

Nuclear plant operators in Kyushu and Shikoku are currently assessing any damage. The Sendai nuclear plant in Kagoshima prefecture has reported no abnormalities and confirmed that operations will continue as usual.
