In a heartbreaking turn of events, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics after failing to make weight on the morning of her 50 kg gold medal bout. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed the disqualification in a statement, expressing regret over the situation.
"Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning," the IOA said. The team has requested privacy for Phogat and indicated no further comments would be made at this time.
Sources revealed that Phogat was approximately 100 grams over the permissible limit. According to competition rules, this disqualification means she is ineligible for a silver medal, leaving only gold and bronze medal winners in the 50 kg category.
Phogat had successfully made weight for Tuesday's bouts but failed to stay within her weight category for the second day of competition, as required by the rules.
