Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized West Bengal's approach to Left Wing Extremism on Tuesday, responding to TMC MP Saugata Roy's suggestion to implement the ‘Bengal model’ in other affected states. During the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Roy praised the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government for its success in handling Maoist militancy and asked if the Centre would consider applying this model elsewhere.
Shah questioned the effectiveness of the Bengal model and wondered if any state would want to adopt it for containing Maoist activities. This exchange highlighted the ongoing friction between the Centre and the West Bengal government over various issues, including security.
In another response, Shah noted a significant decrease in violence in the North East, stating that incidents have declined by more than 60 percent.
Adding to the criticism, BJP leader Amit Malviya mocked the TMC’s claim about the Bengal model. “So, it is not just audacious but laughable for the TMC to tout their efforts as a 'model' to emulate,” he said.
The debate underscores the differing views on handling Left Wing Extremism between the Central government and the West Bengal administration.
