Akhil Giri, the prison minister of West Bengal, has officially tendered his resignation from the post. However, the entire resignation process was a drama in itself. At first, Giri announced his intention to resign in the assembly on Monday directly to CM Mamata Banerjee. On the way to the assembly, he received instructions to send his resignation to the Chief Secretary via WhatsApp.
Sources said that Mamata Banerjee doesn't want to see Giri. Complying with the instructions, Giri signed the resignation and sent it via WhatsApp. However, the drama didn't end there as Giri stopped his car at the Gandhi Statue and signed his resignation there only. Despite his resignation as a minister, Giri affirmed he will continue to serve as an MLA for Ramnagar until 2026.
"I have tendered my resignation through the chief secretary to the Chief Minister's Office. But I will not apologize to any official. I may apologize to the chief minister," Giril told reporters while coming out of the MLA hostel.
The Ramnagar MLA further alleged that small-time businessmen had paid forest department officials bribes to start shops on department land near the Tajpur sea beach in the Purba Medinipur district.
