Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anisur Rahman and his brother Alif Noor alias Mukul Rahman were arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the ration scam. The arrest took place late on Thursday night after a marathon 14-hour interrogation session at the ED office located at the CGO Complex. Both are scheduled to be produced in court today.
Earlier, the ED had also arrested former State Food Minister Jyotipriya (Balu) Malik and his close associate, businessman Bakibur Rahman, in connection with the same case. Anisur and Alif reached the CGO Complex with several documents around noon on Thursday. When questioned by journalists about the documents and their involvement in the scam, Anisur declined to comment and avoided questions regarding Jyotipriya and Barik Biswas.
The ED's extensive investigation included raids across various parts of the state starting Tuesday morning. Several rice mills in North and South 24 Parganas were also targeted. Specifically, ED raided Alif's house and rice mill in Deganga and Barik's flat in Rajarhat, where Rs 20 lakh was recovered after a nine-hour search on Tuesday.
The raid on Alif's residence resulted in the seizure of two mobile phones, several documents, and Rs 13 lakh after a 21-hour search. Following these raids, the Rahman brothers were summoned to the CGO Complex for further questioning. They complied and were subsequently arrested after their late-night interrogation.
