Jammu and Kashmir hit by 5.8 magnitude earthquake, no casualties reported
In an unprecedented move, BJP MLAs staged a fierce protest against the Soren government by sleeping on the ground inside the assembly premises. This unique form of protest took place on the fourth day of the monsoon session, marking the first time opposition MLAs have protested in this manner. The BJP MLAs created a ruckus in the House, demanding answers from the government on various issues, including employment and unemployment allowances.
The BJP MLAs raised slogans in the House, focusing on the employment contract for youth and the regularization of contract workers. They also protested against the withdrawal of the Factory (Jharkhand Amendment) Bill 2023. The BJP MLAs pointed out that the state government had promised to provide employment to 5 lakh youth annually and to offer unemployment allowances, promises which they claim have not been fulfilled.
Despite the adjournment of the House, the BJP MLAs continued their protest by sitting inside the House for about 8 to 10 hours, demanding answers. After being marshaled out around 10:00 pm, they staged a sit-in protest in the lobby and eventually slept inside the assembly premises.
Wednesday marked the fourth day of the monsoon session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly. The proceedings of the first half were peaceful, but chaos erupted in the second half when the opposition demanded answers from Chief Minister Hemant Soren regarding youth employment and the regularization of contract workers. The opposition MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Amar Kumar Bauri, came to the well and announced they would not leave until they received a response from the Chief Minister.
As the uproar escalated, the Speaker of the Assembly, Ravindra Nath Mahato, intervened and ordered the removal of banners from the opposition MLAs. The ruling party MLAs also protested against the opposition, leading the Speaker to adjourn the House proceedings until 11:00 am on Thursday, August 1. Despite the adjournment, the opposition MLAs, including those from the Bharatiya Janata Party and AJSU, continued their protest, staying in the well until 10:00 pm before being forcibly removed by the marshals.
