Death toll in Wayanad landslides cross 150, nearly 200 injured

A devastating series of landslides have struck the hilly areas near Meppadi in Wayanad, resulting in the deaths of at least 156 people and injuring more than 180 others. The catastrophic event, which occurred amid heavy rain on Tuesday, has left over 100 people feared trapped under debris, as multiple agencies and the Army race against time to save lives.

Within four hours, three separate landslides wreaked havoc in Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages. The Chaliyar River's swollen waters swept away several individuals, compounding the disaster's impact.

The Kerala government has responded by establishing 45 relief camps in Wayanad, currently accommodating 3,069 people. These camps provide immediate shelter and aid to those displaced by the landslides.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has declared a two-day state mourning and is set to chair a meeting with senior officials and ministers stationed in Wayanad to review the ongoing rescue operations and coordinate further relief efforts.
