The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary group has formally accused West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee of bias and has demanded his removal. The no-confidence motion, signed by 50 BJP MLAs, was submitted to the assembly secretariat today.
The motion, spearheaded by opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, was handed over to the assembly secretary, Sukumar Roy. The BJP has leveled serious allegations against Speaker Biman Banerjee, accusing him of persistent discrimination in his conduct within the assembly.
The opposition claims that recently when they brought forward an adjournment motion to discuss several critical issues affecting the state's populace, Speaker Banerjee promptly rejected the motion without proper consideration.
The BJP alleges that the Speaker has been inciting members of the ruling party to make allegations of rights violations against the opposition. This, they argue, creates an unfair environment where the opposition's ability to function effectively is compromised.
The opposition asserts that Speaker Banerjee has consistently denied them the opportunity to critique government policies and actions within the assembly. They argue that this prevents a healthy democratic discourse and undermines their role in holding the government accountable.
