President Draupadi Murmu approved the appointment of new governors for nine states, including Jharkhand, late on Saturday night. Former Bareilly MP and former Union Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar will be the new Governor of Jharkhand. He will take oath as the 12th Governor of the state, succeeding CP Radhakrishnan, who has been appointed Governor of Maharashtra.
Born on November 1, 1948, in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Santosh Kumar Gangwar received his education from Agra University and Rohilkhand University. Currently serving as the Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises, Gangwar has held various significant positions in the government.
He was the Minister of State with independent charge of the Ministry of Labor and Employment in the Central Government and has been an eight-time MP, although he did not secure a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Gangwar's political career includes representing Bareilly eight times in the Lok Sabha. He won six consecutive terms from 1989 to 2009, faced a defeat in 2009, but regained his seat in 2014 and won again in 2019. His tenure in the Modi government saw him serving as Minister of State for Textiles, Finance, and finally, Labor and Employment until 2021. Beyond ministerial roles, Gangwar has also held several organizational responsibilities within the BJP.
