A West Bengal government official, Sushanta Kumar Bala, Deputy Magistrate and Deputy Collector of Bidhannagar subdivision, was allegedly assaulted by guards at Kalyani Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Nadia district on Saturday.
The altercation occurred over entry into a hospital ward, police reported. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the assault, said an officer of Ranaghat Police.
Hospital authorities claimed the altercation began when Bala and his brother Prasanta attempted to visit another brother, Akhil, outside of visiting hours. Security guards, contracted by the hospital and not regular staff, were reportedly involved.
Bala stated he was attacked when he tried to assist Prasanta, who was bringing food for the patient. Despite identifying himself, the guards continued to assault him, causing injuries that required three stitches and other medical treatment.
The hospital's senior official emphasized that no regular staff members were involved in the incident and that the security guards are ex-servicemen tasked with enforcing visiting hours strictly. Meanwhile, police have begun an investigation, collecting video evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine the incident's specifics.
