The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conducted a protest campaign today against the recent increase in electricity charges by the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC). The demonstration, held in front of CESC’s office in Central Kolkata, was marked by strong statements from BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who warned of continuous protests and hinted at upcoming changes in electricity regulations from the Centre.
Addressing the protesters, Suvendu Adhikari stated, "Soon a new electricity law will be passed from the Centre, after which their [CESC's] arbitrariness will end." He also made a political assertion, claiming that the state government in Nabanna would collapse with just a slight increase in Hindu votes.
The Calcutta High Court had previously permitted the West Bengal unit of BJP to hold the demonstration as a protest against the power tariff hike. Originally planned for July 22, the protest was rescheduled and took place today in compliance with the court order issued by Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj. The court had stipulated that the number of participants should not exceed 1,000 and directed the state administration to ensure adequate police arrangements for the rally.
