SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
A tragic incident occurred at Gour Banga University when a former student attempted to commit suicide after attacking a first-year student. Both individuals are currently hospitalized in critical condition. The incident has drawn comparisons to the case of Sutpa Chowdhury, a student from Murshidabad who was beaten to death in May 2022.
The injured student, identified as Tanushree Chakraborty, is a first-year mathematics student who had recently completed her second-semester exams. The attacker, Alok Mandal, a former student of the university, allegedly assaulted Tanushree in front of the science department, slashing her neck before attempting to take his own life. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Alok stab Tanushree and then cut his own throat.
Both Tanushree and Alok were rushed to Maldah Medical College Hospital, where they are being treated for their injuries. The police are investigating the incident, including how Alok managed to enter the university premises with a weapon.
A student from Gour Banga University said, "Our exams were going on when the incident happened. We don't know the boy." Rajeev Puttunda, the development officer of Gour Banga University, stated, "I heard from the students that a student attacked a female student with a knife. Our priority is to save both individuals. Then we will look into the details."
