Students of a private nursing college in Kolkata's Garia vandalized the campus alleging that they were duped of lakhs of rupees in the name of jobs. The students alleged that the college administration had promised them jobs in return for Rs 1.70 lakh, but even after two years, they did not get any certificate or job.
The students complained to the college administration at Narendrapur police station on Monday night. Based on the allegations, the police detained the college principal Maniklal Jana, and started questioning him. Meanwhile, the students created a ruckus on Tuesday. The students say that they had collected the amount with great difficulty and deposited it in the college.
A student, Trishna Mandal, said that she had also given her original secondary and higher secondary certificates to the college, and when she asked for them back, she was told that they had been sent to Bengaluru. Trishna said while crying, "We did not achieve anything in two years. We did not get a job anywhere, and due to not having the original certificates, we could not get admission to any other college."
The college head said that the money would be refunded to the students and some have been refunded the amount through cheques. He said that many students want to leave the college without completing the course, and a list of their names is being prepared so that the money can be refunded to everyone.
The students are demanding that their money be refunded in cash as soon as possible. The matter has become a topic of much discussion among residents and students and the police are investigating the matter.
