West Bengal government gets a big jolt in the Sandeshkhali sexual assault case as the Supreme Court dismissed its appeal against the CBI probe into the matter. The Calcutta high court had passed the order directing the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI inquiry into allegations of land-grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali.
"Why should the state be interested in protecting someone?" a bench of Justices KV Viswanathan and BR Gavai observed. The bench added that on the last date of the hearing, the counsel appearing for the Bengal government said the matter be adjourned after the apex court asked this specific query.
"Thank you. Dismissed," the bench said. The apex court was hearing the Bengal government's plea challenging the Calcutta High Court's April 10 order.
In its plea before the top court, the state government said the Calcutta high court's order demoralized the entire state machinery, including the police force.
