Vigilant BSF jawans of the 8th Battalion at Border Outpost Puttikhali under BSF South Bengal Frontier have caught a huge consignment of smuggled gold. Acting on accurate information from the BSF intelligence department, a smuggler was arrested with 20 gold biscuits and two gold bricks from the border area of Nadia district of West Bengal. This smuggler was taking the consignment of gold for further delivery after smuggling. The total weight of the seized gold is 4.7 kg and the estimated price is Rs 3,27,59,000. Earlier in July, BSF and DRI had seized 9.6 kg of gold worth 6.86 crores in a joint operation in Nadia district.
According to a statement issued by the BSF on Saturday, July 5, the intelligence department of BSF received information about gold smuggling. On this, the company commander of Border Outpost Puttikhali, 8th Battalion laid an ambush in the dense area of Mathurapur village. The ambush party noticed a suspicious person coming from Tagori village towards Mathurapur village on a scooter. After identifying the suspicious person, he was apprehended and brought to the border outpost. On checking the scooter, 20 gold biscuits and two gold bricks were recovered from the luggage kept under the seat of the scooter. The apprehended person and the seized gold have been handed over to DRI Kolkata for further action.
The apprehended person was identified as Mathur Das (name changed), a resident of District Nadia, West Bengal. During interrogation, Mathur Das disclosed that after taking the consignment of gold, when he was going to deliver it at Bongaon, BSF apprehended him. In return, he used to get good money.
