Congress MP and LoP Rahul Gandhi on Friday morning visited Rahul Gandhi Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district to meet with the families of those killed in the stampede earlier this week.
121 people – mostly women – died in the fatal stampede. The Uttar Pradesh police arrested six members of the panel so far that organized the religious event in honor of preacher Bhole Baba.
Rahul then went to the Navipur Khurd and Pilakhna villages in Aligarh. He met the families of Manju Devi and Shanti Devi, who died in the stampede. Congress sources said that Rahul Gandhi assured them of financial help.
According to the initial report by the Hathras administration, the stampede occurred after the preacher left the event venue. The devotees rushed to collect the dirt around his feet during which a stampede took place. The administration has alleged that 2.5 lakh people were present at the venue against the permitted limit of 80,000.
