Digha's Jagannath temple gets HC's nod, inauguration on July 7

Calcutta High Court, while hearing a plea today over the Jagannath temple construction in Digha, observed that there is nothing wrong with HIDCO operating in different parts of the state. The division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivajnanam said that the responsibility of infrastructure development is the responsibility of the state. They can assign responsibility to any department, with no problem.

Court gives a go-ahead for the temple which is slated to be inaugurated on July 7. A plea was filed against HIDCO's association with the project. As per the petitioner, HIDCO does not have the power to develop infrastructure anywhere else.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is all set to inaugurate the temple. July 7 also marks the first day of the Ratha Yatra festival and hence, the day was chosen.

The Jagannath Dham, built as a replica of the Jagannath Puri temple in Odisha, is located in the seaside resort town adjacent to New Digha station. Spread across 22 acres, the temple, a pet project of CM Mamata Banerjee, was built for Rs 143 crore, according to the state urban development department.
