New orders for illegal construction on Government land in Bengal
A fatal stampede during a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district claimed the lives of 121 people on Tuesday. Piles of bodies were lying on blocks of ice inside a local government hospital, as weeping relatives of the victims waited outside to take mortal remains back.
These victims were part of the massive crowd that had gathered near Phulrai village of Sikandrarau for a Satsang by a preacher. The Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Manoj Kumar Singh informed that the application submitted by the event organizers seeking permission for 80,000 people, but the actual number was much higher. A report said nearly 2.5 lakh people turned up for the event.
CM Yogi Adityanath today visited Hathras and met the injured. He later said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would probe the incident. Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged against the organizers. The complaint mentions overcrowding and security lapse by the organizers, thus calling for a probe.
