After Om Birla was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee criticized the procedure, claiming that several opposition members requested a division vote, but the Pro-Tem Speaker did not allow it. Banerjee argued that this indicates the ruling party lacks sufficient numbers.
"The rule says if any member of the House asks for a division, the Pro-Tem Speaker in this case has to allow for a division," Banerjee stated. "You can see and hear from the footage of Lok Sabha that several members of the opposition camp sought a division and asked for a division to put the motion to vote, and the motion was adopted without putting the motion to vote."
The Lok Sabha on Wednesday elected National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Om Birla as the Speaker of the lower house of Parliament by a voice vote. The Congress had fielded Kodikunnil Suresh as its candidate against BJP's Om Birla.
