Mamata Banerjee celebrates Christmas with message of unity, attends midnight mass in Kolkata
Amidst a severe heatwave, Alipore Zoological Park in Kolkata has introduced a range of measures to ensure the well-being of its animals. Subhankar Sen Gupta, an IFS officer, outlined the zoo's strategies to mitigate the effects of extreme temperatures. Enclosures are covered with green sheets to block direct heat, and sprinklers have been installed in reptile shelters. Night shelters for tigers and lions now have fans and coolers, while showers have been set up for elephants. Gupta stated, "Firstly, in all the enclosures, we have arranged the maximum amount of water possible because it is the only way to protect the animals from the heat."
Gupta added, "Additionally, we are regularly mixing ORS into their drinking water to maintain their electrolyte balance." Special provisions have been made for animals needing cooler environments, such as air coolers for black bears, sloth bears, and kangaroos. Birds and smaller animals, like lemurs, benefit from sprinkler systems that operate several times a day. Gupta emphasized the comprehensive effort, noting, "During winter, blankets and heaters are provided to them. So it depends on the season. Special care is taken for drinking water throughout the year."
