Molestation allegations mar 5th phase polling in WB, locals thrashed central force jawan in Hoogly

Voting for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections commenced on Monday across seven parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal under tight security measures.

The election process has been marred by incidents of alleged misconduct involving Central Force personnel. A woman has accused an ITBP jawan of molestation after he allegedly entered her house. The jawan was reportedly beaten by locals after being tied to a lamp post. Police have arrested the accused.

Earlier in the day, the Election Commission removed a BSF jawan from poll duty in Uluberia following another molestation complaint lodged by a woman on Sunday evening.

To ensure security, the Election Commission has designated over 57 per cent of the polling stations as sensitive, deploying more than 60,000 personnel from central forces and around 30,000 policemen.

As of 11 am, phase 5 of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 saw a 23.6 per cent voter turnout, with West Bengal recording the highest turnout at 33 per cent.
