West Bengal, including its capital Kolkata, braces for intense heat as temperatures soar above normal levels at the beginning of the week. According to the Meteorological Department in Alipore, Kolkata experiences a minimum temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, three degrees higher than usual, and a maximum temperature of 41.3 degrees Celsius, six degrees above normal. The capital faces the likelihood of a heatwave throughout the day, with other regions like Howrah, Hooghly, and North and South 24 Parganas also expected to experience prolonged high temperatures, ranging from 32 to 43 degrees Celsius.
As the scorching heat persists, residents across various districts, including East and West Medinipur, Purulia, and Malda, grapple with discomfort. The absence of rainfall exacerbates the situation, with forecasts indicating a further rise in temperatures throughout the week. Similar weather conditions prevail in North Bengal districts like Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Darjeeling, affecting residents' daily routines and prompting concerns about heat-related health risks.
