Malda follows Tripura’s lead, bans Bangladeshis from hotels amid growing border tensions
After 21 days of investigation into the collapse of an under-construction building in Gardenreach, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken action against three engineers implicated in the incident. Following the submission of a report by an inquiry committee, which highlighted structural deficiencies and the use of low-quality materials in the construction, the Executive Engineer, Deputy Assistant Engineer, and Assistant Engineer of KMC's Boro No. 15 have been suspended on the orders of the Commissioner and Mayor of KMC. The decision, announced late Saturday night, reflects the seriousness with which KMC addresses issues of illegal construction and negligence.
The inquiry committee, formed within the corporation, revealed lapses in the construction process, including improper reinforcement concrete and inadequate foundation work. While soil testing and construction-related reports are pending, the suspension of the engineers underscores KMC's commitment to accountability. Despite delays in receiving the full investigative reports, questions linger regarding the absence of the soil test report even after 21 days. The incident has raised concerns about building safety standards and the roles of officials in preventing illegal constructions.
