Death toll from the collapse of a five-storey building in the Gardenreach area has risen to 11. Another victim, identified as Abdul Rauf Nizami, was recovered from the debris on Friday morning. Nizami, who was engaged in electrical connection work at the collapsed building, was declared brought dead upon arrival at the state-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital.
Relatives of the deceased have revealed that Nizami was a regular worker at the building site, where he performed his duties diligently. However, locals have raised suspicions, alleging that Nizami held a prominent position within the construction company owned by Mohammed Wasim, who was taken into custody by Kolkata Police following the incident.
Meanwhile, the Directorate General (DG) Building of the Corporation has reported a surge in complaints of illegal construction in Kolkata. Over the past three days alone, more than 270 complaints have flooded the DG Building's mailbox.
Moreover, an internal survey by the land and land reforms department and the South 24-Parganas administration has identified 130-odd illegal high-rises in a single Kolkata Municipal Corporation ward. The survey was conducted over the past three months and the report was submitted recently.
