TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee has been granted temporary respite by the SC, with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) being directed to withhold summoning him until July 10 amidst the ongoing general elections. Banerjee's petition challenging the ED's summons for questioning in a money laundering case in Delhi is scheduled to be heard by a bench comprising Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Pankaj Mithal on the aforementioned date.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Banerjee requested to grant him relief from summons citing, "he is a sitting MP and will be contesting the election again from Diamond Harbour that is scheduled for June 1.”
The bench took note of Sibal's arguments, directing the ED to abstain from summoning Banerjee until the next hearing. “If you have not called him for such a long time, let him be not called for a couple of months more...he is also contesting the elections,” it told the agency.
However, the ED clarified that the same concession would not be extended to Banerjee's wife Rujira, who has also filed a petition challenging the summons.
