After four years since its passage, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has officially become a reality in India. The Centre has reiterated its commitment to implementing the rules associated with CAA before the 2024 polls.
The law, which seeks to provide citizenship to specific religious minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, including Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis, who arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. Notably, the amended citizenship criteria now require immigrants to have lived in India for at least one year in the last 14 years, with a minimum of five years in the last 14, a reduction from the previous requirement of 11 years for naturalization.
