Basirhat court extends Shahjahan's CBI custody by 4 days

Shahjahan Sheikh, the accused arrested in the Sandeshkhali case, was produced in Basirhat court on Sunday. During the hearing, the court has sent Shahjahan Sheikh to CBI custody for four days. The CBI itself had sought custody for further investigation in the case of attack on ED officers in Sandeshkhali, which the court has accepted. The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday had ordered the Bengal government to hand over Shahjahan Sheikh to the CBI. This time CBI had arrived with the Central Security Force. Earlier, the CID team had taken Shahjahan for medical examination.

The bench of Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya of Calcutta High Court had said in its order that we are serious about our order given on March 5. SLP has been filed in the Supreme Court but till now no stay has come on our order, hence Shahjahan should be handed over to CBI by 4.15 pm on Wednesday evening. The court had said that we have issued a notice regarding contempt and have asked the Bengal CID department to file an affidavit-reply within two weeks. During the Calcutta High Court hearing, the ED argued that despite the order passed by the High Court, the state police had not complied with the order, not handing over the accused saying that the case was filed in the Supreme Court.
