Residents of Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, expressed their outrage on Friday (February 23, 2024) by setting fire to the property belonging to Siraj Sheikh, brother of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh, who is implicated in the Sandeshkhali case. The incident occurred in the Kachari area of Beramajdoor, marking a renewed eruption of anger among the local populace.
The preceding night, on Thursday (February 22, 2024), another property owned by Siraj Sheikh was also set on fire by the villagers who accused him and his associates of land grabbing. The escalating tensions prompted a significant police presence in the area. Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reached Sandeshkhali conduct an on-spot inquiry into allegations of human rights violations. Earlier in the week, it had issued a notice to West Bengal chief secretary and Director General of Police (DGP), seeking reports within four weeks.
