'State govt shouldn't back him': Calcutta HC on Sandeshkhali unrest

The Chief Justice of the Calcutta HC has directed TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh, the main accused in the Sandeshkhali case, to surrender immediately. Expressing deep dissatisfaction with the state government and police for failing to apprehend Sheikh despite numerous days, the court held Sajahan responsible for the ongoing turmoil in Sandeshkhali.

"If one person can hold the entire population hostage, the ruling dispensation should not back him. If he is breaking the law, the government should not be supporting him," the Court stated.

The court added noting that in such a case, the administration's Section 144 order was meaningless. "You are just creating a tense situation."

Earlier the HC lifted section 144 permitting BJP LoP Sebhendu Adhikari and MLA Shankar Ghosh to visit Sandeshkali.
