Congress workers in Jaipur staged a protest against the freezing of the party's bank accounts by the Income Tax (I-T) department. The accounts were initially frozen due to an income tax demand of Rs 210 crore, but an I-T appellate tribunal intervened, allowing the accounts to operate pending further hearings next week.
The protest in Jaipur follows the Income Tax department's decision to pursue standard procedures for tax recovery from the Congress, prompted by allegations from party general secretary Ajay Maken regarding the freeze. The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) is scheduled to review the matter on February 21, with the Congress currently owing Rs 115 crores to the Tax Department.
Contrary to initial reports, there have been no seizures or halts in bank operations related to the Congress account freeze. The Congress has strongly criticized the episode, with party general secretary Jairam Ramesh attributing the account freeze to what he describes as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's "politics of revenge."
