Hundreds of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh have initiated their journey towards Delhi as tensions escalate in the second month of 2024. Following inconclusive talks between farmer leaders and Union Ministers last Monday, over 200 farmer organizations are mobilizing towards the capital city on Tuesday. Despite Union Minister Arjun Munda claiming consensus on most issues and proposing a committee for unresolved matters, farmer leaders express concerns over the lack of clarity regarding the legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP).
The farmers' Delhi Chalo march started from today at 10 am.faces resistance from the Haryana government, which has imposed a cordon around the state's borders to prevent protesters from entering from Punjab. Additionally, Delhi's borders are reinforced to thwart a resurgence of the farmer protests witnessed in 2020-21. The farmers' demands include a legal guarantee of MSP, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission formula, complete loan waivers, pensions for farmers and laborers, and the withdrawal of cases against protesters during the 2020-21 demonstrations.
