Congress MP Shashi Tharoor anticipates that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will emerge as the single-largest party in the upcoming 2024 general elections. However, Tharoor proposes a strategy to prevent the BJP from forming the government by reducing its seat tally significantly and influencing its allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). In the 2019 elections, the BJP-led NDA secured 303 seats, aiming for the 400-mark in 2024. Tharoor, speaking at the Kerala Literature Festival, emphasized the importance of forging alliances among opposition parties to challenge the BJP's dominance.
During a session titled 'India: The Future is Now,' Tharoor stated that the BJP's numbers can be reduced to a level where potential allies might reconsider aligning with them. He stressed the need for opposition parties, part of the INDIA bloc, to secure seat-sharing agreements in various states to avoid preventable defeats. Tharoor acknowledged challenges in seat-sharing agreements in certain states but highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to counter the BJP's electoral dominance.
