Mamata calls urgent meeting at Nabanna tomorrow, key administrative officials to attend
In a heated exchange over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), state minister Shashi Panja has criticized Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, accusing him of making contradicting statements. Panja asserts that Thakur expresses contrasting views in Bengal and Delhi, highlighting his dissatisfaction with BJP's stance on CAA in the state.
Panja alleges, "Thakur keeps making contradicting statements—supports CAA implementation while he is in Bengal, but when he is in Delhi, he refutes making such statements in support of CAA. "
She further adds, BJP's attempts to grant citizenship to existing Bengal residents are deceptive and a pre-election tactic, playing with CAA repeatedly."
Earlier, Bongaon MP Shantanu Thakur, the elected representative of Matuas, a religious sect comprising Dalits who migrated to West Bengal from Bangladesh, said on last Wednesday said that Hindu refugees from the neighbouring country are waiting to hear when the CAA will be implemented from the Union Home minister Amit Shah.
"As it has become an act, people from Matua community are waiting to know when the new act will be implemented from the Union Home minister," said Thakur.
