Mamata calls urgent meeting at Nabanna tomorrow, key administrative officials to attend
In a move that has stirred controversy, CM Mamata Banerjee has appointed Rajeev Kumar, a prominent IPS officer, as the Director General of Police (DGP) for the state. The decision has been met with strong opposition from senior BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition, Shubhendu Adhikari, who has stated to take this matter to the court against Kumar's appointment. Adhikari asserts that Rajeev Kumar is currently under investigation by the CBI in connection with the Saradha chit fund case, making his elevation to the top police post questionable.
Adhikari stated that Rajeev Kumar has a history of controversies. During the Left regime in 2009, the then opposition party Trinamool Congress accused Rajiv Kumar, who was holding the charge of the Kolkata STF chief, of tapping the phone of the then railway minister Mamata Banerjee. A decade later in 2019, Kumar found himself at the center of a highly publicized controversy when Mamata Banerjee protested vehemently against a CBI probe into the Saradha chit fund case, wherein Kumar was implicated.
