Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
Allegations of corruption have emerged regarding the admission process at Jadavpur University (JU) in metropolitan Kolkata, as revealed by recently removed interim Vice Chancellor Buddhadev Sao. Sao has written a letter to the University Grants Commission (UGC), urging a central-level investigation into alleged irregularities in the university's admission procedures, specifically at the PhD level.
According to Sao, irregularities include the creation of a super-numeric post for admission, a violation of UGC guidelines. He contends that this practice, initiated in 2017, continued without formal consent from the Commission.
Sao, a senior professor of mathematics at JU, claims that he was removed from the interim VC position while attempting to address these irregularities within the university. He is appealing for a comprehensive investigation by either the UGC or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The removal of Sao from the interim VC role has been linked to his efforts to organize the university's convocation in consultation with the state education department. Despite being reinstated for the convocation ceremony, the Governor declared the event illegal, indicating ongoing tensions within the institution.
