The death toll from China's recent earthquake, the deadliest in years, has surged to 148, according to state media. The earthquake struck northwest China just before midnight on Monday, claiming at least 117 lives in Gansu province and 31 in neighboring Qinghai, with more than 139,000 people relocated to emergency shelters across the two affected provinces.
Emergency response efforts are now shifting focus toward resettling those displaced and treating the injured. While rescue operations are ongoing, authorities have highlighted the urgency of providing aid to the affected populations, especially considering the challenging conditions caused by subzero temperatures.
This earthquake, measuring 5.9 according to the US Geological Survey, is China's deadliest since 2014, when over 600 lives were lost in Yunnan province. The aftermath of the quake has been marked by numerous aftershocks, complicating rescue efforts.
